Do you have an unusual passion for creepy creatures like snakes and frogs? If yes, a career in herpetology can be an interesting option you could explore.
WHAT IS HERPETOLOGY: Herpetology is a branch of biological science, especially zoology which deals with the study on amphibians and reptiles. The field draws on many other disciplines of biology including reproductive and developmental biology, physiology, evolution, molecular biology, immunology, ecology, behavior, systematic, biogeography and conservation.
Education and Prospects: Herpetologists can find a job with a bachelor's degree in zoology or biology, preferably with some concentration in herpetology. They can also benefit from a doctoral degree which will help with any fieldwork or research they might do. According to Degree Finders, the job prospects for herpetologists are expected to increase from 2008 to 2018 due to growth in the biotechnology field.
Duties: Depending on where herpetologists work, they will focus on studying some aspect of reptiles or amphibians. They help to understand and classify current species in order to better know how to preserve them for the future. Herpetologists also work in biotechnology to apply principles learned from studying reptiles and amphibians to new developments in technology.
SKILLS NEEDED: The basic requirement to succeed in this field is the love and respect for amphibians and reptiles. A crucial skill is the willingness to work hard because amphibians and reptiles are not easily visible in the field. One needs to do intensive field work to encounter them. The main challenges in this profession are the difficulties associated with fieldwork and travel as well as potential exposure to dangerous animals. It is important to be cautious and well prepared for all emergencies.
FUTURE BRIGHT: This field is still in its nascent stage in India and there are a number of areas and groups of amphibians and reptiles which have yet not been studied properly. Information about the natural history of several species is lacking. This information is essential for the conservation of the species and consequently the conservation of the habitats they live in. Thus, intensive surveys and serious studies on such species are essential. No wonder then, there is tremendous scope for those wanting to pursue herpetology in India.
