THE ELEMENTARY EDGE

The advent of professional courses may have affected the popularity of vanilla BA, B.sc or B.com. However, pursuing a graduation in pure arts, science or commerce too can lead to a number of employment opportunities.

Passing class 12 marks the transition from school to college for some students and from junior to senior college for others. Some students branch out to professional colleges for engineering, medicine, law, hotel management, architecture, fashion, design, art, etc at this stage. While some take up specialized bachelor's degree course like BMS, BMM, B.Com in Accounts and Finance/Financial Markets/Banking and Insurance or B.sc in Biotech/IT/Aviation, etc.

WHY BA/B.SC/B.COM?: The Bachelor of Arts (BA) program allows you to study subjects like history, geography, political science, philosophy, economics, psychology, sociology, anthropology, mathematics, and English/Hindi/(other language) literature. If you wish to become a secondary school teacher you could pursue a BEd post the completion of your BA with subjects taught at school level. A BA degree also paves the way for you to pursue the Master of Arts in any of the above subjects. Opt for one major (rather than dual) as it facilitates admission into MA. An MA followed by national/state eligibility test could lead to lectureship in a college. MA followed by BEd can lead to teaching positions in a junior college or senior secondary school.

The regular B.com is the wise choice for those who wish to pursue a professional course such as Chartered Accountancy, Cost and Works (Management) Accountancy or Company Secretary. B.com followed by a MCom and a qualification in the NET/SET leads to lectureship in college/university. MCom followed by a BEd leads to teaching positions in a junior college or equivalent.

B.sc is the first step of the ladder for a career as a scientist or teacher. A major in B.sc strengthens your chances of admission to an MSc in the same subject or a related interdisciplinary science. B.sc followed by a BEd leads to teaching positions in secondary school. B.sc with basic physics, chemistry, biology (zoology/botany) is ideal for taking up BEd in secondary school because these are school subjects. B.sc with an interdisciplinary science such as microbiology or biochemistry is acceptable if a student aspires to pursue an MSc in order to take up lectureship. MSc followed by NET/SET leads to lectureship options, while MSc with BEd leads to teaching positions in junior college or equivalent.

MPhil and PhD are the next stage in the academic ladder for postgraduates in arts/science/commerce and position them better for senior faculty positions, and department headships, as also for careers in research and consultancy/ advisory positions in the long term.

PROFESSIONAL PROGRAMMES: MBA (Management), Master of Computer Applications (math till the plus two or during graduation), law (LLB- three years), advertising, journalism, public relations, tourism and travel, hospital management/health administration, human resource management, theatre/drama (requires participation in drama productions), film editing, film production, BEd are professional program open to BA/B.sc/B.com graduates who wish to pursue related career opportunities.

Sound recording/sound engineering/pilot training (physics and math till class 12), food technology/plastic technology/ cosmetic technology (chemistry graduation), packaging technology, dietetics and nutrition, etc are among the professional courses open to science graduates.

Popularly pursued by B.com graduates, Chartered Accountancy, Cost and Works Accountancy, Company Secretary and Chartered Financial Analyst courses are actually open to BA/B.sc graduates as well.
