Biotechnology: The Profession

Biotechnology as the name suggests is the combination of Biology and Technology and is an applied science. It is concerned with variety of subjects including Biochemistry, Genetics, Microbiology, Chemistry and Engineering.

Biotechnology in India has made great progress in the development of infrastructure, manpower, Agriculture, Animal Husbandry, research and development, manufacturing of biological reagents, biodiagnostics, biotherapeutics, therapeutic, prophylactic vaccines, biodevices, and development of Medicines, treatment of prolonged disease, pollution control, waste management, ecological conservation, energy production and many more.

Biotechnology In India: Biotech in India began during the mid-1980s and was concentrated within the large domestic or multinational drug firms. In 1986, the Government of India established the Department of Biotechnology (DBT) within the Ministry of Science and Technology.

Several Small biotech companies have been established since then. There were about 400 firms in India with biotechnology-related activities in 1995. This number has risen to more than 800.

India, today, holds a small share of the global biotech market, but has all the capabilities to become a dominant player. The consumption of biotech products in India is expected to quadruple in the next decade. The human and animal segment of the industry alone is growing by at least 20%.

India has a rich human capital, which is the strongest asset for this knowledge-based industry. India has a large English speaking base and, according to Confederation of Indian Industry estimates, produces roughly 3 million graduates in IT, engineering and life sciences, about 700,000 postgraduates and nearly 1500 PhDs qualified in biosciences and engineering each year.

Career Pathways: The Indian biotech industry employs more than 20, 000 people, which is estimated to grow to 50, 000 (research 50%, technical/ services 35%, management 15%).

A number of companies have entered the field, some with foreign collaborations, opening tremendous job opportunities. The sector players in the industry are not only using recombinant DNA technology but also applying biotechnology principles to various biotech-based areas viz. floriculture, tissue culture and industrial application of biotechnology like enzymes industry, fermentation & bio-chemicals etc.

Several private industries viz. pharmaceuticals, breweries, sugarcane institutes and science foundations are working on various fields like new drug development, improved products and processes, new breeds, tissue culture, bio-pesticides and enzyme production etc.

There are many different career paths where one can take within the biotechnology field. The qualified scientific professionals may be primarily involved Entry-level positions within Research and Development, Clinical Research includes Laboratory Assistant, R&D Associate, Clinical Research associate, Clinical data coordinator, Clinical data analyst, Biostatistician, Drug Safety Officer and etc.

Biotechnology companies also require highly qualified staff in Production, Packaging, Quality Assurance, Quality Control, Production, Regulatory Affairs, as well as Administration positions such as Human Resource and etc.

Medical or Sales representatives work directly with various medical professionals in order to raise the awareness of the company's products and generate sales, where as Management people with life science background can enter to Business Development and they will work with scientific colleagues to bring out various company products to strategic partners and negotiate agreements with them.

Pay Scales: The salaries depend upon academic qualification, university and the level of work exposure. A postgraduate fresher joining in a corporate sector of pharmaceutical company can expect to get a salary in the range of Rs.15, 000 to Rs. 20,000 per month, and fresh B.Sc. / B. Tech. Graduates may get anything in the range of Rs. 75,000 to 1, 00, 000 Per Anum.
